Marijuana is illegal in Texas for both recreational and medical purposes, and possession is a crime. Texas is historically hostile to marijuana.
In recent years, local jurisdictions have reduced the penalties for possession in parts of the state.
Since 2015, low-THC cannabis-infused oil is legal for a limited set of medical conditions with a doctor’s prescription.
In 2019 Texas legalized the cultivation of industrial hemp as well as hemp-derived CBD extracts.
