Marijuana legalization in California

Is marijuana legal in California?

Recreational marijuana is legal in California. Recreational marijuana became legal in 2016.

Regulation of recreational marijuana in California has been put in place slowly and the requirement now for everyone from growers and sellers to apply for expensive licenses has slowed the growth of the industry in California. The situation has been made worse by the fact that California is no longer issuing any licenses until 2021.

California is in the process of merging its cannabis oversight groups Bureau of Cannabis Control (BCC), its Department of Food and Agriculture and its Department of Public Health to create a Department of Cannabis Control.

The consolidation is expected to be complete in July 2021 and is expected to make the marijuana industry more streamlined.

There are ongoing advocacy efforts to open up the recreational marijuana market in California. Weedmaps is sponsoring a “Open Marijuana in CA” campaign.
